Preparing For MSMS

Preparing for MSMS

MSMS is a place where lives are changed and where momentum toward greatness is built. It is important that every high-achieving student in the state gives this incredible opportunity all the attention it deserves, and it is vital that you are prepared when it comes time to begin working on your application.
There are several things you need to know before you get started. Scroll down, and read detailed information about what to do before you get ready to be a part of this amazing institution.

You must live in and go to school in Mississippi at the time you apply to MSMS.

MSMS is for Mississippians. In order to be eligible to apply, you must be a legal resident of the state of Mississippi who is currently enrolled in a school – public, private, parochial or home school – within the state. Although we often hear interest about the school from students all over the country, we do not accept applications from students outside Mississippi.

You can only apply during your sophomore year of high school.

MSMS is a school for juniors and seniors; therefore, students interested in applying must do so during their sophomore year of high school. YOU ONLY HAVE ONE CHANCE TO APPLY TO MSMS! If you are a current junior or if you are a sophomore and have missed the priority application deadline you may not apply to MSMS.

You must have good grades if you want to go to MSMS.

By good grades we mean an overall grade average of 90 or higher. That means we will average all the grades for the primary academic courses (math, science, English, social studies, and technology) for which you have received high school credit and will only consider you if your average is within the range of 90-100+. During the application review process, your grade average is the most critical factor in determining your ranking.

You must submit an ACT score as part of your application.

All prospective MSMS students must submit an ACT score along with their application. We do not have a minimum score for admission; however, the higher your score, the better your chances of being admitted into the school. We ask that students who are serious about MSMS try to get a score of at least 20 or higher. Research and experience have shown that students who make a 20 or higher are not only much more likely to make it into the school, they are also much more likely to to be successful and graduate from the school. For more information about ACT dates and how to sign up for the test, visit If you somehow missed the last date for regular testing before our application deadline, there are still some options available to you. Email us at for more information about residual testing.
