About Dr. McConnell

Dr. McConnell began his career in education teaching Geometry, Trigonometry, and Pre-Calculus at Rosa Fort High School in Tunica, Miss.  He then worked as Program Manager for the Mississippi Teacher Corps (MTC) where he recruited nationally for non-education graduates interested in teaching in Mississippi and coordinated the initial training program.  Dr. McConnell has been deeply involved with teacher preparation since 2000.  He prepared alternate route teachers through MTC as Program Coordinator and later as Co-director.  He also helped prepare traditional teachers in his roles in the School of Education at the University of Mississippi as Assistant Dean for Undergraduate Advising in 2003 and later in 2006 as Assistant Dean for Field Experiences.  Before coming to MSMS in July 2011, Dr. McConnell also had a role in administrator preparation through his role as Assistant Professor of Educational Leadership.  His passion to improve the state of public education in Mississippi is now being realized through leading MSMS to fulfill its mission to "enhance the future of Mississippi."

Dr. McConnell served as Director for Academic Affairs (Principal) for MSMS from 2011 through 2013. Currently he serves as the Executive Director, which means that he is responsible for coordinating long- and short-range planning; development and implementation of policies; providing direction with respect to financial, personnel, academic, admissions, and student services matters; serving as liaison between school and government agencies; and coordinating public relations initiatives.
